CERB & Employment Insurance (EI) Information

Applying for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)

The CERB supports Canadians by providing financial support to those affected by COVID-19.  It provides a payment of $2,000 for a 4-week period (equivalent to $500 per week) for up to 16 weeks.  You can apply for the CERB starting Monday, April 6, 2020. Ways to apply:

1. Online through the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) Application Portal: Click Here

2. Through CRA My Account:

  • If you don’t already have one, create a CRA My Account at
    • You have three options for registering: Using a CRA Sign-In Partner, such as online banking, creating a CRA user ID and password, or using a BC Services Card
    • You will be prompted to answer some security questions such as SIN, DOB and postal code
  • Once in your CRA account, go to COVID-19: Canada Emergency Response Benefit in the alert banner at the top right of the page
  • Select the period you want to apply for
  • Declare that you qualify for the benefit
  • Confirm the CRA has the correct information

3. By Phone:

  • Call the automated toll-free line at 1-800-959-2019
  • Follow the prompts to enter your information, including:
    • Your SIN
    • Confirmation of postal code
    • The period you are applying for
    • Declare that you qualify for the benefit

Both services are available 21 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They are closed from 3:00 am to 6:00 am EST for maintenance.

To manage the volume, you are being asked to apply on certain days based on your birth month:

If you were born in the month of  Apply for CERB on Your best day to apply 
January, February, or March Monday April 6
April, May, or June Tuesdays April 7
July, August, September Wednesdays April 8
October, November, or December Thursdays April 9
Any month Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 

Payment: The CERB is paid by direct deposit or manual cheque.  Direct deposit payments should be received within 3 business days of submitting your application.  Payments by cheque should be received within 10 business days of submitting your application.

Applying for Employment Insurance (EI)

Your Record of Employment (ROE) will be issued to Service Canada electronically. ROE’s should be visible shortly after your final pay is processed; however, with the increased volume in applications, there may be a slight delay being able to access. You can start your claim before your ROE is visible.

  • To start your EI claim, go to
  • Once you have reviewed the eligibility criteria, select “Ready to start?”
  • Continue filling out the required fields to complete your EI application.

Should you need to contact a Service Canada representative regarding your EI application, please call 1-800-206-7218 and press “0,” Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM local time or go to a Service Canada Centre.
